Title: Give Your Website A Chance

Author: Elizabeth McGee

Article:
I often wonder how serious people are when it comes to their
websites. I thought that most everyone knew that the phrase
“Build it and they will come” no longer applies on the internet
but I’m not sure how many people really believe it.

I look at sites everyday as part of my sales strategy and I
can’t tell you how many of them violate the obvious elements of
good website design and submission.

What even amazes me more is that they can’t figure out why they
don’t get sales or visitors.

Do yourself a favor and attempt to apply the following tactics
to your site. They won’t cost you a thing except a little time
and effort to apply them.

** About Page **

Always include an about page on your site. Don’t be afraid to
tell your story and let people know who you are and how you
arrived where you are.

Opening yourself up and letting people know who you are adds an
element of trust. It exposes your personality, capabilities and
knowledge. All factors that let your readers know you are
genuine.

** Include all your contact information **

Let your visitors know that you are available. Encourage
questions, email and phone calls. Include your name, address and
phone number. If you can, it’s also helpful to place a photo on
your site. Familiarity is key and it can add one more link in
the ladder of trust.

** Headlines **

Create compelling headlines. Peak the interest of your readers.
This is your chance to grab their attention and incite them to
read on.

Don’t be flashy or obnoxious. Simply tell it like it is. Capture
their attention with descriptive, informative words. Get your
readers involved in your information. Ask questions. Make them
think.

You might be surprised to learn that just one compelling
headline can bring instant sales almost overnight.

**Create your meta tags **

This is the first place I look when people tell me they aren’t
getting visitors. I often see sites that have no title or
description tag or the tags don’t follow the suggested
guidelines for proper setup.

Here’s an example of how the tags might look for a site that
sells hummingbird feeders:

Hummingbird Feeders: Shop For Hummingbird Feeders
Online

You will need to do this for each page of your site. Each page
needs to have it’s own set of tags. I also recommend focusing on
one keyword per page, two at the very most. Too many keywords
can confuse what your page is about.

Always make sure that your keywords are scattered throughout
your text as well, however don’t sacrifice good content for
nonsense. Your text should be easy to read and should not sound
redundant. Make your pages at least 250 words.

** Testimonials**

Solicit feedback from buyers you’ve had. Ask them to write a
small testimonial that you can place on your site. This goes a
long way to help convince your visitor that your products and
services are sound.

** Linking **

Reciprocal linking is a common and effective tactic for
obtaining search engine status and page rank but it’s also the
most time consuming. It requires making contacts, following up
with contacts and updating your website.

While reciprocal linking is an excellent way of establishing
page rank it’s not the only way. Page rank can also be
established by submitting your site to directories, writing
articles and setting up blogs. Don’t underestimate the power of
website links. Take the extra few hours a day and get your site
noticed.

** Offer Guarantees *

Always offer your products with a guarantee. This is often the
extra boost a buyer needs to make the purchase.

A good site will offer 100%, no-questions-asked, money-back
guarantees. People rarely take advantage of such guarantees but
it’s this statement that may tip the scales in your favor.

** Submit Your Site **

Last, but not least, don’t neglect to submit your site to the
search engines. Many of them are no longer free but the fees are
nominal and worth the expense. Google still offers a free submit
and it’s easy, simply type in your URL address, however make
sure your meta tags include a title and description tag first.

For the free search engines I don’t recommend using automated
submissions. Submit them yourself taking care to compose
accurate titles descriptions and keywords.

Title: Using SSI’s to Ease Site Maintenance

Author: Lauri Harpf

Article:
Before building a site, every webmaster has to make a decision
on what layout method to use. Most seem to go with either a
frame or a table-based layout, the latter being more popular in
these days. While both of these have their advantages and
disadvantages, a frame-based site is usually easier to update.
If you happen to have a 200-page site with the same navigation
on every page, adding one link to the navigation menu might
require you to edit all of the pages if the design is built with
tables. On the other hand, if the site uses frames, you can get
by with changing just a few files and save yourself a lot of
time.

No, I’m not trying to convince you to switch to frames. I myself
use tables and am not going to change my layout. The only
problem is that over time, sites tend to grow. It just might be
possible to edit around 20 pages when you want to change
something, but when we start talking 50 or over one hundred, it
just doesn’t seem like a good idea. Unless you are prepared to
spend hours trying to keep your navigation menu up to date, you
have to come up with a better way of doing things.

SSI’s to the Rescue ===================

If your host supports Server Side Includes and is running
Apache, you can use this article to make your table design as
easy to maintain as it would be if you were using frames. The
best part is that visitors won’t even notice that you have
changed anything. After the new system is in place, they will
see exactly the same design and HTML code as before, but you
will be saved from hours of monotonous work.

Server Side Includes, or SSI’s, can be used in many ways. With
them you can execute CGI programs, display the current date &
time on your page and do plenty of other things as well. In this
article, we use them for including external files to your HTML.
The idea is to create a separate file from your navigation menu
and use SSI’s to point to it, requiring you to merely edit one
file when you wish to change the navigation.

Should you have some knowledge of Server Side Includes, you
might be a little worried. Doesn’t this require that you rename
all your pages from “.html” to “.shtml” if you want it to work?
That would take a lot of time, break the links that are pointing
to your site and you might have to resubmit your pages to the
search engines. Is it reasonable to go through all that trouble
to make maintaining your site a little easier?

Fortunately, there’s no need to start renaming any files. You
can simply instruct the server to treat your “.html” files as
“.shtml” files and execute all SSI instructions in them. This
can be done with a “.htaccess” file. If you already have one,
you’ll have to edit it. If you don’t, open up a text editor,
such as Notepad, and paste the following lines into a blank
file. Be sure to replace .html with .htm, if you’re using that
extension.

Options Includes AddType text/html .html AddHandler
server-parsed .html

Save the file in “All files” mode and name it “.htaccess”.
Include the quotes so that Notepad won’t decide to name the file
“.htaccess.txt”.

Changing Your Pages ===================

After the .htaccess file has been created, you’ll have to make
changes to your HTML files. To be on the safe side, take backups
of them before doing anything. Then, paste the HTML you use to
generate the menu from one of your pages into a blank file. Save
the file as “navig.html” for example. Next, remove the
navigation menu from all of your pages. Replace it with the
following line:

What you’re doing is telling the server to insert the code from
“navig.html” into the page. This will be done before the page is
sent to the user who has requested it, so anyone visiting your
site will merely see a normal HTML file. When you have finished
editing your files, connect to your host via FTP and upload the
“.htaccess” file, the “navig.html” file and the new versions of
your content pages.

Then it is time for the true test, trying to visit your site and
see what happens. If you have done everything correctly, you
should see that your pages look the same as before. However, if
you make a simple change to the “navig.html” file, it will apply
to the navigation menu of every page. What used to take minutes
or even hours can now be done in seconds, giving you the
possibility to use that valuable time to do something other than
changing the HTML code of each page separately.

Author: Stephen Cope

Article:

If you are able to create a document using a word processor
like word then you are able to make a web page. Here we will
look at how to make a web page using the Trellian WebPage page
editor.

Trellian Webpage is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)
editor which hides the technicalities of HTML.I have chosen to
use this editor because it is a very simple and uncluttered yet
a powerful web page editor, and equally as important, there is a
completely free version available for download on the Internet.
If you don’t currently have it then follow this link to download
Trellian Webpage for free.

In order to illustrate how to make a web page we are going to
make a series of web pages to illustrate the various aspects of
a web page like headings, tables, images etc. None of the
examples will require a knowledge of HTML. However if you are
interested in learning HTML then I have a series of articles
showing how to make a web page using HTML

Making a Web
page preparation

We will not be concerned with web page layout and
design as that will be covered in other articles. For these
exercises contained in these illustrations create and save all
files in a directory c:websBYO.

If you don’t want to use Trellian Webpage then you can there are
many alternatives like FrontPage, Dreamweaver. You can even use
Notepad for simple Pages.

Author: Candice Pardue

Article:
One thing that will kill the potential for a website is the lack
of order for the web pages – especially the homepage.

If you’re going to design your own website, be sure that you
find a pattern that will be appealing to your visitors and
design your website to follow the pattern.

You’ll be amazed at the difference between the success of an
organized website and a disorganized website.

Here’s why:

The organized website clarifies purpose and grabs the attention
of the “target” visitor right from the start. Organization
allows your visitor to relax and settle in to read the
presentation, click on links, and simply enjoy your website
without worry.

The disorganized website confuses the visitor, brings stress,
and often times causes the visitor to click out to go somewhere
else quickly. Once a visitor views your homepage, you’ve made
your impression on him/her – and it’s an everlasting one.
Remember, you will not be able to stand over your visitors’
shoulders as they view your website and explain what you meant
to “say” or “do” on your site. The site itself must explain,
clarify, and lead your visitor to the goal.

How to Set Your Website in Order:

Below are five simple pointers to help create an organized
website that your visitors will enjoy:

1. State the purpose of your website at the very beginning of
the homepage.

2. Give a description, welcome, or presentation of your website
on the homepage if possible.

3. If you have a banner on your web page, place the
banner/graphic at the very top of your page, before “any”
writing (including your headline), or at the very bottom of your
web page, after your entire presentation.

4. Place your navigation links on the left or right side of your
web page. You may also place links at the top and/or bottom of
your page. But, try to avoid placing navigation links or
graphics in the middle of your web page presentation. This will
distract the visitor from reading the important information
about your website.

5. Narrow your website to only a few products which compliment
one another. Concentrate on these at first, and then expand to
other “related” products once you’ve built a solid visitor base.

The five above tips are given from experience. I’ve had to learn
these methods through trial and error, but you can now learn
from my experience and begin your new website with organization
and an appeal to your visitors.

Use these tips to make a lasting impression on your visitors,
and increase your potential for website success.

Career Options In Computer Graphic Design
Entertainment Articles | February 12, 2009

Graphic design is the best profession to accomplish your dreams.

The job market involving graphic design would be one of the hottest by 2014. The careers would be centered on graphic, website and computer animation design. Though computer graphic design would throw up plenty of job openings, the market would be highly competitive. This is because this line is pursued by many. A four year college degree or a Bachelors Degree is sufficient to become a computer graphic designer. For getting some technical positions, you need only two years college degree or Associates Degree. Remember however that this type of career does not move ahead, without adding further educational qualification. Formal education is a must, if you want to pursue this career.

Close to a third of people who do computer graphic work, do it as independent freelancers. Half of the freelancers would hold steady jobs in either a computer graphics company or employed in some computer related organization. These small companies can not afford to pay the fees demanded by large design firms.

There are several other career options in computer graphic design. You can make a career in the print medium like books and magazines and the audio medium like advertising or electronic, like films and television.
Although not wide enough in terms of variety, a career in a small or large specialist company may throw up a steady stream of work. You may of course decide to work s a freelancer.

A college degree and burning ambition to reach the top are not enough to pursue this career. You need to develop skills using graphic design software and other computer related skills. A collection of your best work ought to be made called your portfolio. The quality of the contents of your portfolio would subsequently decide whether you would get assignments or would still be waiting for something to crop up.

As soon as you finish your college and have made up your mind as to what you want to do, your aim should be to get that first entry level job. There are online job boards, online or print classified ads or the college or university placement desks, where you could get to know the available opportunities in computer graphic design jobs. Online job boards, classified ads as well as job for hire boards are the places where freelance job opportunities are displayed. Because every one knows that this is a rather expensive endeavorHealth Fitness Articles, work for hire boards give better results for design careers than any other career. May all your dreams come true in your pursuit for a graphic design career.

Title: Importance of Having Your Own Domain Name

Author: Sumantra Roy.

Article:
A question that I frequently hear is “Do I really need to have
my own domain name?” The one word answer is “YES.”. If you put
up your site with some of the free web hosting services, the
only company who benefits is the web hosting company. The last
person who benefits is you.

There are a number of reasons why having your own domain name is
a must:

1) When you have your own domain name, the address of your web
site will be of the form http://www.yoursite.com. On the other
hand, if you put up your site on one of the free servers, the
address of your web site will be something like
http://www.somefreewebsite.com/yoursite/. Which of these two
sounds more professional? Which of these two is smaller and is
hence easier to remember? I leave you to make the judgement.

2) The only way to make money online is to build up credibility
among your customers. Having your own domain name is the first
step in doing that. Your customers will feel more comfortable
buying whatever it is that you are selling if you have your own
domain name. It makes your customers feel that they are dealing
with a large, established company, rather than with some fly by
night operator.

3) When you have your domain name, you can have multiple email
aliases of the form alias@yoursite.com. This allows you to
assign different email aliases to different functions, all of
them pointing to your actual email address. Hence, for example,
for questions related to the products and services that you
sell, you can have an email address like sales@yoursite.com. For
questions related to the newsletter that you publish, you can
have an email address like editor@yoursite.com. For
comments/suggestions about your web site, you can direct your
customers to feedback@yoursite.com or webmaster@yoursite.com.
Having different email addresses for different functions not
only makes it easier for you to filter your email using your
email client program (Eudora Pro, Pegasus Mail, Outlook Express
etc.), but also gives your customers the impression that yours
is a large, established company with whom it is safe to do
business.

4) Many search engines give a lot of emphasis to the home page
of a particular domain, i.e. other things remaining the same, a
home page of a domain will often rank higher for a particular
keyword than any other page. When you use some of the free
hosting services, your index.html page is the home page of your
site, but not of that domain. Hence in these search engines,
your site will find it very difficult to make it to the top 20
or top 30, let alone the top 10 for some of the really
competitive keywords. Just think of the amount of traffic that
you will lose if this happens.

5) Some search engines are now refusing to spider the web sites
which are hosted by the free web hosts. For instance, if you
have a site hosted by the free web hosts, you would, until
recently, have got the infamous error message saying that too
many pages have been submitted from your site if you tried to
submit your site to AltaVista. While AltaVista now says that
“your URL has been submitted for processing” if you try to
submit your site, rest assured that it will not spider any site
belonging to many of the free web hosts even though it says that
your site has been accepted. Can you afford that?

6) When your site is hosted by some of the free web hosts, you
will find it very difficult to get it listed in a major
directory like Yahoo!. Although Yahoo! will never admit that it
won’t add a commercial site which is being hosted in one of the
free web hosts, in practice, it will be a miracle if you can get
your site listed by Yahoo!!. Listing your site with Yahoo! is
difficult enough even when you have your own domain. Don’t make
your task more difficult than what it needs to be.

If you do not currently have a domain name, are you convinced
that you need one right now? The small fee that you pay per year
for your own domain name is peanuts compared to the benefits
that you get. You can check out the availability of domain names
and register new domains at:

Article:
It seems that everyone from the 15-year-old kid to their
Grandmother is able to design a web site these days. You could
also build the site yourself using a word processor or other web
site program; however if you choose this route, plan on spending
quite a bit of time learning, to get your site to look
professional. Creating a web site is not as simple as typing a
letter.

If you want your site to look professional, it is imperative to
find a designer that will be with you from the start to the
finish of your web site and will also be there in the future
should you need changes or updates to your site. So how do you
distinguish who is a good designer or a bad one?

Here are some important steps to take before making that
important decision:

Title: CASCADING STYLE SHEETS AND SERVER SIDE INCLUDES

Author: Amrit Hallan

Article:
Highlight: Below, first we learn how to define individual tags
with multiple definitions using the Cascading Style Sheets, and
then we learn how to include common components on multiple web
pages with minimum effort.

We packed up with external Cascading Style Sheets in the
previous section, and I had mentioned like a sage that their
could be a point in your life when you would like to implement
different CSS definitions for different sections of the same
HTML page. I understand that as you go through these HTML
gospels, you’re growing wiser and wiser, and your unquenchable
thirst for wisdom is attaining new heights. Good!

We use the CLASS attribute to render different CSS definitions
to same tags. Ok, before we move ahead, today I read in an
article that tags in an HTML file should be used in small caps
so that they can be used in sync with the emerging trends like
XML etc. So small caps from now on.

Supposing, in one section, we want to look purple, and
in another, we want to look black. If we do it in the
usual

a { font-size : 10 pt; font-family : Arial; font-weight : bold;
color : Purple; text-decoration : none; }

a:hover { font-size : 10 pt; font-family : Arial; font-weight :
bold; color : Purple; text-decoration : underline; }

manner, we’ll only have a purple colored tag because
the definition is applied universally. So what do we do. We uses
“classes” in this manner:

a.sec1 { font-size : 10 pt; font-family : Arial; font-weight :
bold; color : purple; text-decoration : none; }

a.sec1:hover { font-size : 10 pt; font-family : Arial;
font-weight : bold; color : purple; text-decoration : underline;
}

a.sec2 { font-size : 10 pt; font-family : Arial; font-weight :
bold; color : black; text-decoration : none; }

a.sec2:hover { font-size : 10 pt; font-family : Arial;
font-weight : bold; color : black; text-decoration : underline; }

If you’re the noticing type, you’ll notice the use of sec1 and
sec2, which we can take as the two sections. We execute these
definitions in the HTML page somewhat like this:

To see
the site of the immortals, click this purple text.

To see
the site of the dead, click this black text.

Let’s now life the CSS affairs and move on to the SSI – Server
Side Includes.

Although in the real world, it depends on the guy/girl managing
your server whether you can use the SSIs or not, assuming you
can use them, you should know how and why to use them. First,
why?

The use is somewhat akin to the external CSS. One change, and it
is reflected through the entire web site, even if there are
thousands of pages.

The ideal use is the navigation bar. Of course you know that
every web site deserving to be called a web site must have a
navigational system so that you can explore it in an amiable
manner. On this web site – http://www.Bytesworth.com – if you
can see those gray buttons on the right hand side, they help you
navigate through hundreds of information pages.

To facilitate hurdle-less navigation, these buttons should be on
every page, so that you can immediately click to the section of
your desire, irrespective of where you are loafing around.

This is achieved by including the line

Where “nav.inc” is some file you deem fit to include. The
extension “inc” does not have any technical implication in this
case – you can have any extension. Whatever code is there in the
included file, gets included in the HTML file. So wherever you
want to use the include file’s content, append the above line
where you want the output to appear.

There is another way to include file such as , but for the time being, you can do
without it.

Including a navigation bar is not the only utility of the SSI’s.
You can come up with complex ASP and CGI codes to include in
your page, but that is beyond the scope of this tutorial, at
least at the moment.

Another thing to keep in my mind while making pages that are
destined to have included files in them: there extension should
be SHTML rather than HTML or HTM. This extension informs the
ignorant server that the file being loaded is going to use the
SSIs.

In the next section, we are going to deal with a navigation bar,
and how to use tables (remember them?) for it. We’ll also learn
how to define bulleted list.
